Bio
(pasted from a scholarship aplication because I am lame, lazy and unoriginal but there you have it. I'll be the first to admit it's corny!)
My name is Everett Elam. My mother first noticed my blindness when I was about six months old. She immediately began looking for doctors who knew about blindness. That was still quite an arduous task since solutions like simply “googling” “physician who deals with blindness” didn’t exist yet. But she persisted. Finally, a physician in Memphis, Tennessee diagnosed Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous in my left eye and optic plasia in the other. I was then taken to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center. After many surgeries and a prosthetic for one eye, I am still blind in both eyes.

I eventually enrolled at the Arkansas School for the Blind (ASB) in Little Rock to begin pre-school. This school provided the modifications I needed to learn to use Braille books, talking calculators, screen readers (like JAWS), etc.

During my years at ASB, I’ve been involved in a myriad of activities. I received one of my first awards in third grade - for top honors in English. I began playing the violin in the 5th grade and the guitar in 7th grade. During my 9th grade year, a few of my friends and I started a rock combo called “Inner Vision” and recorded a CD! A little later, I developed an interest in audio production and currently have a part time job with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s (UALR) Public Radio Station.

I’ve participated in many school organizations and held several offices such as vice-president of Student Council. I’ve also been on the track team for four years. I love to run and exercise with friends. I have participated in Ark.’s Easter Seals’ annual 5K race and “Rollin’ on the River”. I was on Little Rock’s Today’s THV running the two-mile event at a state track meet. Running is an activity that helps define who I am. When I joined track and started really working hard and going on trips with the team, I gained a lot of confidence.
*grins* I'll spare you the rest of that pointless drivel. Suffice it to say that I'm now in college, I'm having an ok year and I'm still sorting out what I wana be and how I wana be it.
